Creative Flow

The National Center for Choreography at the University of Akron in Ohio supports the creative process. As an incubator for dance, the center offers spaces for artists to experiment, develop their craft, and create new works. The Doctor Carter G. Woodson African American museum in Saint petersburg, Florida, preserves and interprets African American history. We learn more about its role in the community and the ways in which it shines a light on the importance of equality and inclusivity. Rick Braveheart is a nature photographer. When he goes outside with his camera, he sees beauty all around him and develops a deep connection with the land. We joined him on one of his outings in Ohio to get a look at his process.

Author Jyotsna Sreenivasan writes about the experiences of Indian Americans. The daughter of Indian immigrants, Sreenivasan hopes to build connections with her readers. With “The Jerome Project,” artist Titus Kaphar focuses on a history that is personal. Through a series of impactful portraits, he examines the lived experiences in our society. We take a trip to South Lake Tahoe, California, to meet harpist Anne Roos. With her Celtic harp, Roos shares music with audiences from all over the world. We visit Ohio to hear about a collaboration between artist Amber D. Kempthorn and the akron symphony orchestra. Animation and classical music were brought together to create a memorable experience.

Empowered

When he was only eleven, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo began performing professionally. Over the years, he has gone on to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, appear on broadway, and win a grammy. We travel to New Mexico to learn about the painter Henriette Wyeth. As the daughter of acclaimed artist N.C. Wyeth, Henriette began studying art at a young age. Throughout her career, she painted portraits, still lifes, and floral compositions in her own unique way. Nicole King is a jewelry designer in Reno, Nevada. With metal and stone, she creates a wide range of pieces for adornment, and they leave clients feeling empowered and inspired.

Building Community

“Columbus Pride Bands” is Central Ohio’s LGBTQ plus community band. When the organization’s members gather together to perform, they evoke joy and provide an inclusive environment. We head to Nevada to meet the team behind “Emmy’s Flower Truck.” founded in 2020 by Emily Macpherson, members of the Reno-Sparks community can visit this flower shop on wheels and take home one-of-a-kind arrangements. We travel to Ohio to learn about the quest special forces dance team. created by dance instructor Richie Mckeever, the team offers kids with special needs a space to express themselves. Not once, but twice, Miriam Zimms has had to battle cancer. Based in Florida, she discovered the Arts in Medicine studio at Moffitt Cancer Center and art became a way to heal.

Legacies

We take a trip to Ohio to learn about the artist John W. Carlson. Having passed away suddenly in 2020, his empathy, passion, and legacy are remembered by those who knew him and admired him. The artwork of Nneka Jones makes you think. Combining embroidery, paint, and textiles, this contemporary multidisciplinary artist confronts challenging topics and reflects on the injustices occurring in the world today. Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Andrew montoya is an award-winning artist who creates devotional art. mentored by his aunt, he passes on his knowledge to the next generation and gives back to the community.

Local Legends

In Miden, Nevada, Sabrina Frey uses thousands of glass beads to create eye-catching, tactile mosaics. With inventive techniques, she transforms these beads into landscapes, flowers, animals, and much more. Known for his work on Marvel Comics, Bob Layton is a comic book artist and writer who has over 6,500 comic books credited to his name. An exhibition at the Scarfone Hartley Gallery in Tampa, Florida celebrated his life and career and brought about a special collaboration between Layton and Artist Ales Bask Hostomsky. Artist Gabriel Gaffney Smith’s wood carvings evoke movement. As a former professional ballet dancer, he imbues his intricate creations with energy and feeling.
