Originally called South Branch, the original Sunset Park Library opened to the public on December 9, 1905, at 5108 Fourth Ave (at 51st Street). The original two-story, Classical Revival-style building, designed by architects Lord & Hewlett and funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, was demolished in 1970 and rebuilt in 1972.

Brooklyn Public Library and the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), a nonprofit with extensive affordable housing and community development experience, are partnering to redevelop Sunset Park Library. They are building a new, nearly 21,000-square-foot branch topped by 49 units of affordable housing—including 9 units reserved for victims of domestic violence.

During the new library construction, interim library service is being provided at 4201 Fourth Ave (at 43rd Street), in space made available by the New York City Police Department.
