I promised this after class last week and never got to do it. Part of what I was thinking after viewing this was its (intentional or unintentional)commentary on the excessive display of masculinity: Conan, Arnold, Whitman. Layering them into this bizarre palimpsest, especially with Song of the Broad-Axe(!), adds a richer resonance to the pothead, plunger-wielding performance by Sam: even as the reading teeters on the edge of pure absurdity, it simultaneously ironizes that masculine excess, one that may make us look differently at the posturing of Whitman (Talk about Mr. America!) and that foregrounds the performative quality of gender.
