It’s Father’s Day this #ScenicSunday, so Dad goes first. We lead off with an action shot of Bob Shutte, a three-year letterwinner as a third baseman and shortstop for Rutgers from 1970-72, at the plate. We then make our approach with an image of his son Rob, the 2023 Division I Northeast Coach of the Year who just completed his 12th season at the helm, directing Scarlet Knights men’s golf at an event. ⚾⛳ Bob also played football as a defensive back, wide receiver, and kicker at Rutgers from 1969-71, earning three varsity letters. The family matriarch – Catherine – is a Rutgers graduate who first met Bob as a student sportswriter for the Daily Targum. 🏈📝

Whether you’re observing the holiday today or Monday, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy Juneteenth. Sometimes referred to as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Texas and announced that the enslaved people in that state were declared free. New Jersey passed the state holiday in September 2020. State leaders decided the holiday should have a fixed day every year: the third Friday of June. President Joe Biden signed the law making Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021. The national holiday is celebrated on June 19 itself, unless it’s a weekend.

For this week’s story of #HowWeMetAtRU, we have Matthew & Lillian Sontz ✨ "I am Matt Sontz from Wallington, NJ. Lillian Rodriguez was from Harrison, NJ. In 1996, I was a Rutgers engineering school sophomore living in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Lillian was a freshman English major who commuted to Rutgers College from her dad’s home in Edison, NJ. We both worked at the then-new Lowes Theaters on Route 1. We would hang out at work, at my fraternity, all over campus, and downtown New Brunswick. We loved late-night runs to Pizza City in New Brunswick. We did everything together. We fell in love. I graduated in 1999 and went to Rutgers law school in Camden. We got married in 2002. We had our first son Tyler in 2003, and I graduated from law school. Lillian graduated in 2004, and we bought our first and only house in Westfield, NJ. We had our second son Dylan in 2007. We had our daughter Skylar in 2011. Our eldest son graduated high school in 2022 and went to college. He’s home for the summer! Our younger son is a lifeguard and wrestles for Westfield high school. Our daughter is finishing her first year of middle school. We have been married for 21 years. We love to look back at our time at Rutgers. Our son attends the Rutgers wrestling camp every summer. We love our chance to return home and reminisce about where we started. Thank you, Rutgers! We love you!" Submit to the #HowWeMetAtRU series ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dJ3sPme

For Arnold Rabson, Director of the Child Health Institute of New Jersey, training tomorrow’s scientists is a family tradition. As Father’s Day approaches, he looks back on the contributions of his parents, whose studies changed the course of medicine, while he continues their legacy through his own work. “My parents were all about service,” Rabson said, “and doing the best they could for people who needed help.” Read the inspiring story: https://ow.ly/Yov150OMk7R

This #ScenicSunday, we advance some more to score next to the College Ave Gymnasium on the New Brunswick campus, where a historical marker denotes, “On November 6, 1869, on this site once known as College Field, Rutgers College hosted the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, in the first intercollegiate football game. The Rutgers team, then known as the Queensmen, defeated Princeton 6-4, catalyzing the development of modern American football.” 🏈
