…hey Indira… I am very interested in your idea of writing out Whitman’s poem in Cyrillic– you are the only translator to do so! What’s your outstanding reason for this? It’s funny… I was thinking about what I was going to discuss with you all on Saturday, and one topic was regional linguistic variants. Whitman was a fan of slang (“So Long!” is a famous example), and I think he would have appreciated a local flavor in his translations. Using Cyrillic seems to me to be a choice that demonstrates your interest in Serbian history and culture… can’t wait to hear what you have to say on this!

I like the lines in the poem "To a Stranger" that you have chosen. I think that these lines help to capture what Walt Whitman believed in mostly, which was unity with all, and he also is almost leveling himself with us as a people. Whitman believed that although he was a famous American poet that he was just like all the rest of us, still going through life one step at a time and putting on pants one leg at a time. I found a blog linking you to a specific post that I think can connect you with the same type of compassion and love Whitman feels for people that I think was shown in your blog post of his need of unification. I think that his connection with slaves in his poem “Song of Myself” relates to your blog. He deeply shared a special connection with slaves especially after viewing an actual slave auction in the south. That is what I think set up the foundation of the increased passionate he felt for people who he felt were just like him.
