Interesting to think how different the experience of reading it is from the experience of reading Whitman’s Civil War poetry–not just the subject matter, but the music: the way this heavily rhymed and measured form (kind of a hymn, but with the feel of a march) drives us home to the same line over and over. (I guess you could say Whitman did do a somewhat similar thing in “O Captain,” though this was his least favorite of his own poems.) What do you think the difference was between what this poet and Whitman wanted their lines to achieve?
