The reason comments are set to be moderated by default is that having comments approved by default can lead to all sorts of spam. If we can set things up this way, I think that it would be good to set comments to being automatically approved when submitted by users with accounts (ie., our students), but moderated when they come from the outside.

I do think that many students don’t realize that first-time commenters need to have comments approved by defaut, so I’ve asked Claire to put together a little tutorial on that.

This may all be moot; while we can reset the settings on new blogs, I’m not sure that we can alter the settings on blogs already created.
