And look who we saw there? After the tour, Me, Fab Fab, Chase and Danique decided to have lunch together at Grimaldi’s Brooklyn location. This was my first time eating pizza from there and it was absolutely DELICIOUS! As soon as we walked into the restaurant, we saw our tour guide Jesse Merandy and his brother. They already placed there order and they got a pizza with everything on it! When we sat down to order our pizza, I was hungry but a bit skeptical because Chase raved about how good the pizza was. And when people rave over a certain place its never what its assumed to be. BOY WAS I WRONG! The four of us shared a half extra cheese half peperoni large pie, two slices each and drinks. It was worth the walk. The walk was great the lunch was great my classmates are great and the whole experience is awesome. Grimaldi’s will be my new stop for lunch on days i crave for pizza!

]]>During the whole “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” tour, the stop that actually touched me was the water taxi/ bklyn ferry stop. Our tour guides told us that back then in the 19Th century Brooklyn and the city weren’t really connected. The people that lived in Brooklyn usually stayed in Brooklyn and the people who lived in Manhattan, stayed there as well. The ferry was the only connection between the two because the subway system wasn’t build yet. This made me think and realize that i kind of take advantage of the MTA and my city… I go back and forth to these places without even knowing that there was a time transportation wasn’t given and access was limited. The last time i took the ferry was when i was 7.. When it gets warmer, i will take the ferry to Manhattan and appreciate it!

The great Fire of new york took place during December 1835. It started in a warehouse building and assuming with the amount of chemicals and products in the building that caused the fire to spread rapidly. Getting water was a problem considering most of it was probably frozen caused by winter weather conditions. Firefighters from out of state (Philadelphia) had to be brought in to try and stop the rapid fire. The great fire of New York left many people without jobs and homes.
I believe because of the area and building that the dire started in, that made the fire spread. Also the lack of firefighters and hydrant water supply in the city resulted in the massive damage. If New York was stable then and would’ve calculated the large amount of people, area, business and the population in a whole, they would’ve seen that if a fire was to occur, it would be dangerous not to have a large amount of rescue teams.
I chose the picture above because when I first read the title, I automatically assumed the fire was in Brooklyn considering thats where Whitman was usually located. It was very interesting to me when i read that it was actually near wall street. And as we all know today with the World Trade Center, The Wall Street area hasnt really had much good luck with fires etc. This photo also lead to my assumption about the reason why the fire spread so rapidly.

]]>Walt Whitman may have confused many of his readers the first few times they’ve read his poems. Considering his work was never meant to be read fast. I feel as if it was meant to be read slow and comprehensive. In “Song of Myself” he constantly switches roles between an advice giver, a very demanding person and a confused individual. Many times in the poem he makes himself feel higher than all gods possible. In the 19Th century the Church was the most powerful source. However, when Whitman was being the “advice giver” he told his reader and himself that they have to look at themselves as something higher than that. He took quite a risk writing those lined above in his poems but that was how he was able to get his message across. I chose this image because its a photo of a church in the 19Th century in Brooklyn Heights where Whitman grew up.
]]>I am the poet of the woman the same as the man,
And I say it is as great to be a woman as to be a man,
And I say there is nothing greater than the mother of men.
I chant the chant of dilation or pride,
We have had ducking and deprecating about enough,
I show that size is only development.
Have you outstript the rest? are you the President?
It is a trifle, they will more than arrive there every one, and
still pass on. “
“I believe in the flesh and the appetites,
Seeing, hearing, feeling, are miracles, and each part and tag of me
is a miracle.
Divine am I inside and out, and I make holy whatever I touch or am
touch’d from,
The scent of these arm-pits aroma finer than prayer,
This head more than churches, bibles, and all the creeds.”
(I chose those lines from “Song of Whitman” to represent this picture because in this photo, the background is very colorful, vibrant but relaxed, beautiful, creative and natural. However, the silhouette is of me, a small young woman who remains strong through it all. Looking at my small but firm muscle, knowing that with my courage and force I can tackle any task thrown my way.)
